Rubbish Dump Dos and Don`ts: The Garbage You Can and Cannot Dump

ALL ARTICLES ^
29/10/2021

Most Adelaide residents think they can take any garbage to the rubbish dump; after all, "what type of garbage won't they accept?". You'd be surprised; there are several types of garbage that rubbish dumps reject due to many reasons.

Some of the reasons are; they can't handle the garbage you're bringing in, don't have the facilities to take the trash, and have strict laws surrounding the garbage's disposal. You'd want to know what your local rubbish dump accepts before you drive out and receive disappointing news.

There are two sides to waste produced from the same place; some can be hazardous while some are harmless. To be on the safe side, here are some of the garbage you can and cannot dump :

Household Waste

There are two types of waste produced in every Adelaide household, hazardous and non-hazardous. "But I don't have any hazardous waste in my home ", you do, and you'll be seeing some of them soon.

For the non-hazardous waste produced in your home, this covers your kitchen waste, such as food scraps and used beverages or food cans and bottles. In addition, tissue paper, used skincare, etc., are some of the things you can safely dump at the rubbish dump.

However, you have a lot of hazardous waste in your home that you shouldn't take to the rubbish dump. For example, your engine oil, antifreeze, car fluids, gasoline etc., are some things you can't bear to the landfill; they're highly toxic and won't be accepted.

Some of your cleaning solutions contain chemical solutions so dangerous that you can't take them to the rubbish dump. So instead, pour all these chemicals down the drain when you know you're ready to dispose of them.

Garden Waste

Garden waste can also be hazardous and non-hazardous. When people think of gardens, they think about green manure, but you'll see how some gardening equipment can be dangerous. The safe waste produced in gardens is organic waste such as grass clippings, tree branches, soil etc. This waste doesn't threaten the environment; rather, it helps out because they can reuse it.

When it comes to the hazardous waste found in gardens, we have pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers etc. These are all chemicals that harm the person handling them when used wrongly. You can't even begin to imagine the damage they'd do if they're accepted by rubbish dumps, one of the reasons they're not taken.

Building Waste

Building waste is harmless for the most part—cement, bricks, sand etc., are harmless and can be taken to the rubbish dump. Where it starts getting dangerous is when you get to the asbestos-containing materials.

Asbestos is highly toxic and causes great harm to anyone and any environment exposed to it. Consequently, no rubbish dump accepts asbestos or asbestos-containing waste.

Knowing what garbage you can and cannot dump makes waste disposal more tricky. So why not just find a waste management service that accepts hazardous waste? At Metro waste, we accept asbestos waste and other wastes you can't take to the rubbish dump.
